Founded in New York in 1938 by Hans Knoll, the US manufacturer of design furniture for the office and home, it boasts products included in museum collections such as the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the MOMA.
The brand has revolutionized the way of creating the office space design: the most interesting insight concerns the open space work station.
Hans Knoll was born in Stuttgart in 1914; son of a furniture manufacturer, he grew in contact with the world of furniture and design, developing a critically constructive attitude towards family activity, started two generations earlier by his grandfather Wilhelm Knoll. The turning point came in 1943, when Florence Schust (shortly afterwards Florence Knoll), convinced her future husband to involve her in the project to bring the company to extraordinary levels of competition. She involved many of her fellow architects, such as Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames and Isamu Noguchi, whose creations became design icons of the twentieth century.
In 1955, after the premature death of her husband due to a car accident, Florence took over the management of the company. Many of her projects such as chairs, tables, sofas and desks are still icons of design appreciated all over the world even today.
In line with the ambitious personality of its founder, the company offers creations that can inspire, creations that last over time and evolve. The ultimate goal in every project is to adapt the furnishing elements to the continuous change of lifestyles, both at home and in the office. The brand pays particular attention to the most diverse work requirements, designing modern work environments that respect the ecology pr
From the office to the home enviroment, the common thread that twists and turns around the Knoll project is ambition
In every design choice there is a motivation, not only aesthetic but also experiential. This is pointed out by the Tulip Knoll table, created in the early ’40s by architect Eero Saarinen. The threadlike and slender base allows you to let yourself be crossed by a feeling of mental order, generated by the smooth movement of the curves. A single base able to eliminate the disorder generated by the excessive legs of tables and chairs.
The latter, from the same collection, transmit even more fluidity and freedom of movement thanks to the rotating functionality of the chair. Another collection that does not restrict the movement is the Barcelona Knoll armchair: this collection of chairs and armchairs is the answer to the modern need for movement, not physical but internal. Finding the perfect balance of your body on these chairs means giving life to inner motions of pleasant sensations.
Knoll chairs: the most requested, the most iconic
The proposals in the Knoll catalog are endless, but among the most requested products there are some design icons such as the Knoll Bertoia chair: the light and sculptural lines create a hologramatic image capable of projecting anyone who takes a seat into an ethereal dimension. The “interference edges” that characterize the object derive from a particular light source: the brilliant foresight of Harry Bertoia which continues to sign the mark since 1952.
Another iconic product is the Cesca Knoll chair, with its characteristic cantilever shape to visually and ergonomically offer a greater flexibility. It is the perfect chair for those looking for impulses in the most unexpected moments of the day, for those who know that the best insights are those that reach us suddenly and are welcomed in comfort.
