The Cassina Paravent Ambassade, crafted by Charlotte Perriand in 1969, is a screen that merges Japanese aesthetics with ingenious craftsmanship. Originally designed for the residence of the Japanese ambassador to France, this screen reflects Perriand’s deep appreciation for East Asian artistry, acquired through her extensive travels in the region. Created to discreetly separate the office from the reception area, the screen was placed alongside a grand, seven-meter sofa, enhancing the solemn elegance of the space. Due to budget constraints, Perriand resourcefully used leftover solid rosewood from her Tabouret stools, fashioning 313 meticulously hand-cut blocks into a sophisticated, movable structure. These blocks are connected with vertical tension rods, each piece separated by anchors, allowing the screen to form flexible, flowing shapes reminiscent of a finely woven textile. The Paravent Ambassade is a testament to Perriand’s dedication to both form and functionality, offering a refined solution for private and public spaces alike.
