Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Mecox Bay on Long Island's South Fork, this luxury waterfront estate is the result of the combined vision of Barnes Coy Architects, Italian architect and interior designer Massimo Castagna, in partnership with Interni, and built by Sagewood. Located in an ecologically sensitive area, two and a half hours drive from Manhattan, it is conceived to offer fantastic views of the surrounding landscape while merging respectfully with nature. It features geothermal heating and cooling, 30% of electricity coming from solar power and a floodwater retention system beneath the private tennis court.
“Nature, sustainability and the use of authentic materials are an essential part of contemporary culture” says Massimo Castagna, who together with Interni was in charge of translating the overarching architecture concept into a state-of-the-art interior design project. The palette is simple: concrete, stucco, and padouk wood. A stunning staircase in acid-etched steel connects the main level to the middle one, which hosts seven bedrooms, a recreational area and a terrace with an infinity edge pool. Above is a rooftop deck equipped with an outdoor kitchen. “When it comes to design, what people really want is Made in Italy,” continues Castagna, who designed the staircase “A universe made of small, top-level companies, with a unique culture and approach to quality.” A vision enabled by Interni, which offers its clients a total design experience and the opportunity to work with the best artisans’ workshops in Italy.
For this estate, Interni was responsible for the coverings of all indoor and outdoor floors and surfaces. Ostuni stone, a natural material of the travertine family, was used both outdoors, after undergoing a special treatment, and indoor, thanks to a water-based finishing that makes it less porous. The lighting project is by Flos, the kitchen is by Arclinea. All wardrobes are custom-made to perfectly fit into the rooms of this stunning, oceanside villa.
