The CH22 Armchair by Hans J. Wegner, reintroduced by Carl Hansen & Søn in 2016 after decades out of production, is a true testament to Danish craftsmanship and timeless design. Originally created in 1950, the CH22 lounge chair stands out with its distinctive wooden backrest adorned with visible cover caps, a hallmark of Wegner’s design language. On closer inspection, additional signature details emerge, showcasing the masterful construction that has made Wegner’s designs enduring classics.
The chair’s armrest is particularly noteworthy, expanding under the arm for optimal support while seamlessly connecting to the side stretcher and seat frame. The seat itself is intricately hand-woven from durable paper cord, a process that remains true to the original craftsmanship principles Wegner followed when overseeing the first production runs at Carl Hansen’s workshop. The cords are carefully threaded through a horizontal groove in the back rail, adding both visual interest and structural integrity.
