Marcel Wanders was born in 1963 in the city of Boxtel, Netherlands where he grew up. He began his education by taking lessons for a short period at the Eindohven Academy and later graduating in 1988 with honours from the Arnehm Institute of the Arts. His successful career started in 1995 when he opened his own design studio in Westerhuis in Amsterdam. Immediately from the following year, his popularity was consecrated worldwide when he received the Rotterdam Design Prize for designing the "Knotted Chair" for Droog Design, now manufactured by the Cappellini brand. A unique and visionary chair where design becomes art, an object to collect and to treasure, whose exceptional quality was confirmed by the Moma of New York which included it in its permanent collection. This was only the first of many international awards that have adorned his career as a designer.
He founded the Moooi brand with Casper Visser in 2001, of which he is designer and art director, a brand that reflects the personality of its founder, bringing together originality, elegance and exclusivity and which today has propelled his fame all over the world.
He is an eclectic figure with a unique ability to innovate and innovate himself, capable of transforming and reinventing, always achieving incomparable results. A designer but also an art director, interior designer and entrepreneur, in demand as a lecturer in the most important design academies and as a member on jury panels for various design awards. His affirmation and consideration as a designer is now such that he has been discussed in the most important industry magazines and newspapers around the world. The Washington Post wrote of him in April 2003: “Marcel Wanders, the design world’s star”.
He currently collaborates with the most important contemporary design brands including Poliform, Flos, Barovier&Toso, Cappellini, B&B Italia, Moroso, Magis, Fiam, Alessi, and Boffi.
